Supporting Local: MetroStar Raises Over 2K for Rainbow Families

Written By: Rachel Teter

As an organization, we have an intrinsic responsibility to make a positive impact within our communities.

During June and July, MetroStar’s Collaborative Action of Responsible Employees for Society (CARES) program led a Pride t-shirt fundraiser to raise funds for Rainbow Families, a local DC nonprofit dedicated to supporting, educating, and connecting LGBTQ+ families, parents, and prospective parents.

The fundraiser successfully sold 49 t-shirts generating over $2,000 in donations. All proceeds collected through our CARES fundraiser were directly donated to Rainbow Families to support their nonprofit and mission.

MetroStar's CARES program represents our commitment to giving back and maintaining the connection to the communities that have given us so much. CARES has three primary groups: Health & Humanitarian, Education & Communities, and Hometown Heroes.

Rainbow Families' work fully embraces the three primary groups of CARES. The nonprofit operates in the Washington, DC area and supports over 7,000 families monthly. They offer a wide variety of education programs, support groups, and opportunities for members to connect. Rainbow Families, "envisions, and strives for, a nation where all LGBTQ+ families can legally, openly and safely live in full equality."

"As a smaller, grassroots organization that educates, supports and empowers LGBTQ+ families in the DMV and beyond, we rely on community support such as this to do the important work we do," said Darren Paul-Vance, Executive Director of Rainbow Families.

MetroStar constantly seeks new ways to engage with the local community and help foster inclusive spaces across the region. Liz, a Principal UX Strategist at MetroStar, is the Board Director at Rainbow Families and connected MetroStar with this dynamic, thoughtful nonprofit.

"I became involved with Rainbow Families because I wanted to work with a family-friendly LGBTQ+ organization that has a positive and direct impact on the community around me," said Liz. "My service to the nonprofit allows me to give back and work with an organization that provides hope to those that have faced barriers and supports their dreams of creating a loving family."
